Battleforce (1987) was a cool idea that allowed players to control entire units instead of single 'Mechs. Although I liked it the few times we actually used it, playing Battleforce was a little clunky and involved a lot of fiddly bits.
Although not a lot of players used Battleforce, it eventually morphed (by way of Battleforce 2) into what we now play as Alpha Strike, which is a much faster way to play Battletech, that maintains much of the feel of the original game but without all the book keeping.
Seriously, though... Battleforce is a good game, and it's very enjoyable to play. It's too bad more people didn't pick it up.
