I have been messing about with an alternate reality for Battletech. To avoid any confusion with the basic Battletech continuity it is set in another galaxy; The Canis Major Overdensity (a.k.a. the Canis Major Dwarf Irregular Galaxy)
There are no Successor states in CMO. Instead the dwarf galaxy is divided into two primary factions, the Stellar Continuum, and the League of Worlds. These two large bodies are each made up of multiple smaller "Nation States", among them the Domain - a cluster of a dozen colony worlds populated mainly by humanoids.
Mecha is made up of the normal mix of fighters, tanks, helo's, and the like, but the Alpha Mecha is the Enforcer. By Battletech standards, an Enforcer is a quad mech normally having a turret. They do not, however, move in the same manner as an Inner Sphere quad mech. Instead, they move on roller units (think of them as spherical tires). In rough terrain the legs act as long-travel shock absorbers, and in the most difficult terrain, enforcers can actually walk.
The setting starts at the end of a massive war between the Continuum and the League. A war that ended by "Demobilization in place". A military term used to sanitize the abandonment millions of soldiers on worlds far from their homes. In the days following the official end of hostilities (no winner was ever officially declared), some units went back into battle to settle things (at least on a local level). Some units simply drifted apart leaving thousands of "Drifters"; Soldiers trapped on foreign worlds who wander from town to town in search of a new home, jobs (honest and dishonest), or just a safe place to rest for a few days.
The Canis setting is almost post-apocalyptic. The war lasted for hundreds of years and left most inhabitable worlds damaged in some way. Cities lie in ruins or are abandoned. Eco-systems are damaged or even destroyed. A lot of local technology has been lost, although the two big players seem to have retained most, if not all, of the tech they had at their peaks. Transport between worlds is hit-and-miss. Some worlds have thriving interstellar trade, while others are backwaters that are never visited.
Rules:
The Canis Setting uses rules from The Battletech Manual, as well as Maximum Tech, the Tactical Manual, and a few other rules grabbed form Battletech publications.
RPG is played using a modified version of Mechwarrior 1st edition. As I work on this, I will begin adding adjustments for non-human races.
