MEGAMEK is as true to the pen-and-paper Battletech as anyone can get. It is an open-source, cross-platform, multi-player, on-line, turn-based conversion of the latest set of Battltech rules. While it is not tablet-friendly (it's very mouse-and-keyboard), and cannot support LAMs, it is still a really fun way to play Battletech on the quick.
You can play it solo against the AI, or against other humans via server play.
You can download it for free here [LINK]. My personal recommendation is to download MEKHQ. This package comes with MegaMek (the actual game), MegaMekLab (a battlemech creation and editing tool), as well as MekHQ (a chunk of software for running campaigns).
So, go get it, play it, and enjoy it.
